Fall is right around the corner! There is no time like the present to start getting your home ready for the winter months. Don’t feel overwhelmed, just focus on these nine important tasks to keep your home in tip top shape.

Prepare Your Fireplace

Make sure your fireplace is safe and ready to use with a quick inspection. Follow these suggestions to help keep your fireplace safe and ready to use.

2

Fertilize + Water

Give your lawn a jump start for the Spring. Adding fertilizer and then watering to ensure that it seeps into the ground will keep your lawn healthy over the winter.

Aerate

Another way to boost your lawn’s health is aerating it at least once a year. Aerating helps compact soil loosen allowing nutrients and water to penetrate the soil. Don’t have an aerator? Simply rent one from your local home and garden store.

9

Swap Out Lawn Items

Clean and store any outdoor items such as lawn mower, furniture and grill you don’t plan to use in the winter. Pull out the snow blower if you have one, and make sure it is cleaned an in working order, so you are ready for the first winter snow.

Remove + Drain Your Hoses

Avoid cracks of your hoses, faucet or even pipes when the cold sets in. Turn off any shutoff valves on water supply lines that lead to the spigot.

6

Winterize Your Sprinklers

If you have drain valves, you can do this yourself by turning off water, shutting off the automatic controller and opening drain valves to remove water from the system. Otherwise, hire an irrigation company to come blow out the system. It’s worth the cost to ensure they work properly again in the Spring.

Clean Gutters + Down Spouts

Regular cleaning of your gutters can help you avoid potential costly issues to your home down the road. This is especially important in Fall when leaves are falling and often clogging your down spouts. Do it yourself with these easy tips from The Home Depot.

7

Check Smoke Detectors

Avoid that annoying chirping that always seems to occur in the middle of the night by testing your smoke detectors (and carbon monoxide detector if you don’t have a combination detector) regularly and replacing the batteries twice a year.

Furnace Checkup

Before you kick on that furnace for the first time, swap out the air filter. Also, manufactures generally recommend a tune up each year to ensure your furnace runs smoothly all winter long.
